While watching the news on television one night, 10-year-old Monica Plumb of Powhatan County, VA, saw a story about SurgiVet® Recovery Oxygen Masks being used to save a family pet after a house fire. She was so moved by the story that she decided she wanted to get personally involved in raising money to buy pet masks for area fire departments.
Monica launched an ambitious campaign to provide the lifesaving oxygen masks to fire departments, starting with those in Powhatan County where she lives. Monica’s father helped her create a web site, www.petmask.com, which was launched last October. She also designed donation cans and solicited sponsors. In just three weeks the campaign generated enough cash and pledges to purchase one mask kit for each of the county’s fire stations. “It feels really good to know that animals are being helped,” Monica said.
Monica recently appeared on the “Virginia This Morning” television show, and has been featured in newspaper stories, and radio and television spots throughout the area. Monica and her website are now capturing national attention. Monica is motivated by her love of animals, and hopes to be a veterinarian when she grows up. In the meantime, she intends to keep up the good work so she can reach her goal of putting SurgiVet® Recovery Oxygen Masks in every fire department “across Virginia, throughout the nation and all over the world.”
